2012 is the Year Of The Park in Collingwood

June is Recreation and Parks month in Ontario but, 2012 may turn out to be the Year of the Park in Collingwood.  We actually have lots of parks as you’ll find here.

There is the new JJ Cooper Park being built in the Creekside subdivision off High Street. Then there are plans afoot to redevelop both Central and Heritage Parks.

Heritage Park is located at the corner of Third and High Streets opposite the Mountainview School in the west end of town.  The site will be home to a new fire hall slated for construction this year.  You can read the news article and see a concept plan on the Collingwood connection site.

The proposed new plan calls for a renovated Centennial Pool, better parking, more green space, a relocated skateboard park and two baseball fields.  For those of you who have a feeling of déjà- vu, it’s true that the previous council had a plan and started working on the site a few years ago but scrapped the project as costs started mounting well beyond the original budget. For now, it’s an idea and a plan – how to fund this redevelopment is still to be determined.

Then there is a possible 35 million dollar redevelopment of Central Park on Hume Street including a potential partnership with the YMCA.   The full committee report can be found here.

The latest is a proposal for the Pine Street Market Square which has turned out to be surprisingly controversial.  The plan calls for a public plaza in a portion of the Pine Street parking lot.  Personally, I LOVE the idea and think it could have long term benefits for the downtown however, the naysayers are screaming about the loss of some parking spaces.  (Oh, don’t even get me started on THAT topic!)

It looks like it will be an interesting year around here.
