Before the year is over, Collingwood will be home to a brand new, state-of-the-art library in the downtown core.  As I previously posted, the Town council had approved a budget which included building the library to a silver standard under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).  Well, the news just got even better.

Last week, it was announced that COLLUS, the town’s local utility company, will be donating a ground source heat pump, a solar water heater and monitoring equipment to the project. This donation, valued at about $300,000 will take the Library from a silver to a gold LEED standard.  From what I have heard, this means Collingwood will have the very first GOLD standard library in Canada!

It’s nice to see our area finally pulling together in showing real respect for the environment.  First it was a smoking ban, then an anti-idling by-law, then pesticides were banned and now, we’re moving into cutting edge design.  There are many other initiatives on the horizon and in the works in this regard however, for the moment, it’s just really exciting to witness such good civic news.
