It pays to look good when you’re 150 years old

hcd-downtown.jpgWhile Canada just celebrated her 140th birthday, 2008 will mark Collingwood’s 150th birthday and darn, we’re looking good.

When you wander around town, it doesn’t take long to notice that Collingwood has a magnificent cache of heritage assets.  From the post office and the town hall to the gorgeous homes on the tree-lined streets, to the Lighthouse, the Watts boathouse and the terminals, the town really has a special feel and sense of place due to some excellent heritage preservation efforts.  According to the Heritage Committee’s website (, the Municipal Heritage Committee advisor for Ontario’s Ministry of Culture said, “When it comes to recognition and celebration of heritage resources, Collingwood is emerging as a leader in Ontario.”  Being a lover of heritage buildings myself, I really liked that statement.

In 2003, Collingwood became the first community in Simcoe County to establish a Heritage District and a short time later, it became the very first downtown in the country to be listed in Canada’s prestigious Register of Historic Places.  We really do have one of the best preserved 19th century main streets in Ontario.  We also have homes that make my head swoon with their palatial size, architectural wonders and antiquities of days gone by.
