Lend Me A Tenor

In a continuing series about the Arts & Culture scene in South Georgian Bay, Irene Thomas of Theatre Collingwood brings us another great guest post today.  Thanks Irene.

You don’t have to live in the city to enjoy live theatre!

Within a one-hour drive of Collingwood, there are many professional companies offering great entertainment. Some operate during the summer and fall, while others present year-round.  To the north and east:  Gryphon Theatre and Theatre By the Bay (Barrie), Sunshine & Company (Orillia) and King’s Wharf Theatre operated by Drayton Entertainment (Midland).  To the south: Theatre Orangeville (Orangeville) and to the west Meaford Hall (Meaford) and Roxy Theatre (Owen Sound).

Right here in Collingwood, Theatre Collingwood is a professional producing company whose summer home is the Gayety Theatre.  The company’s motto is “quality productions of outstanding literature.”

If you’re feeling the need for a “split your sides laughing” evening of entertainment, then Theatre Collingwood’s production of LEND ME A TENOR is a must-see!  Opening night, people jumped to their feet with a standing ovation.

Here’s the basic story.  A grand opera company has invited a leading Italian opera star to perform at their fundraising gala.  Il Stupendo loves wine and women along with his song.  Married to an over-attentive Italian wife, he is also hotly pursued by the opera Director’s “groupie” daughter, the tight-assed Guild Chair, a sexpot prima donna and an enthusiastic opera fanatic bellhop.

The exhausted celebrity takes too many tranquilizers and passes out cold.  It’s a crisis backstage at the opera with the shrimp canapes turning green and the sold-out crowd getting restless.  The show must go on!  What will they do?

Do you think for a moment, I’ll tell you what happens?  Not a chance.

There are only ten side-splitting performances of this classic comic farce, August 13-16 and 19-23 at 8pm with one matinee on August 14 at 2pm.  Pick up the phone today and call (705) 445-2200 or visit the website for details:  www.theatrecollingwood.com

Oh yeah, don’t forget to bring a bandaids in case you split your sides laughing.
