Who Says You Can’t Find a Well Paying Job in Collingwood?

According to the newly released “sunshine list,”  about 40 people in our region earned in excess of $100,000 last year including several municipal and hospital employees plus a couple of police officers and Conservation Authority employees.  The Town of Collingwood led the way with 13 names on the list followed by Wasaga Beach with 11, 4 in Blue Mountain, 3 in Meaford and just 1 in Clearview.

Some may also be surprised to see the President of the Blue Mountain Village Association named on the list.  While the BMVA is a non-profit entity, it exists by virtue of  legislation under the Province.

As a long time member of the private sector my experience has been a not so gradual decline in salary over the years. Clearly I should have followed my family into the public sector – all of them are better paid, gold plated pensions and work WAY less. Oh and they’ll retire on those pensions long before me, as of today I have to wait until 67! What largesse our taxes pay for.

I often wonder how much is enough and how that threshold is established? Is a movie star or sports figure really worth millions? The same question applies in the public sector. I think many of the people on the sunshine list work very, very hard but others, not so much. I just don’t know how wages are reasonably and fairly determined in some cases.
